Paris, 1928. Antoine Balestro, a young and fashionable painter, has been unable to work since the death of his wife and is causing despair to Armand, his gallery owner.
One drunken evening, Antoine tries to contact his wife through a fortune teller. Unbeknownst to him, he's actually speaking with Suzanne, a humble carnival worker who has slipped into the caravan to steal food. Suzanne proves to be a master of deception and, quickly joined by Armand, she begins a series of fake séances. Little by little, Antoine regains his inspiration, but for Suzanne, things become complicated as she slowly falls in love with the man she's manipulating...
