It's almost time to pack for your vacations. We've put together a little guide to make sure you don't forget anything. Weather is an unpredictable phenomenon. That's why it's important to equip yourself as well as possible to adapt to different weather conditions.
The ultimate secret? The 3-layer system.
The 3-layer system is a well-known clothing technique for adapting to changing weather conditions in the mountains. It's based on three layers of clothing with specific functions, to regulate temperature, wick away perspiration and protect against cold and bad weather. Here's how to optimize your comfort:
This layer, often called the "base layer", is in direct contact with the skin and must wick away moisture (perspiration) to avoid the sensation of cold. It can be a long-sleeved tee-shirt or a fitted undershirt.
Recommended materials:
- Synthetics (like polyester or polypropylene) for their ability to dry quickly.
- Merino wool: natural, it is thermoregulating, wicks moisture well and limits unpleasant odors.
Avoid: Materials like cotton, which retain moisture and take a long time to dry, risking chilling you.
This layer traps body heat to maintain a comfortable temperature. It needs to be warm, while remaining breathable to prevent perspiration build-up.
Recommended materials:
- Fleece: lightweight, breathable and quick-drying. Ideal for intense activities or cooler days.
- Light down-filled or synthetic down jacket: although a down jacket is best suited to a static position (e.g. a snack break on the terrace), it's a great way to stay warm right from the start of your session.
Down or synthetic? Down is extremely insulating and lightweight, but loses its effectiveness when wet. Synthetic insulation (such as Primaloft) is often preferable in wet or humid conditions.
This outer layer protects you from the elements: wind, rain, snow. It must be waterproof, windproof and breathable. It can be a waterproof, breathable jacket (hardshell in Gore Tex or other).
If you don't have your own ski equipment, or don't want to take on too much, there are a number of rental stores throughout the Les Orres 1550, 1650 and 1800 resorts.
You're all set for a memorable vacation!
