A "Smart Mountain" resort: technology at the service of the environment

Conceived in the 60s as a "car-free ski resort", Les Orres has a strong commitment to protecting nature in its DNA. It stands out for its constant search for solutions to reconcile the development of the tourist industry with respect for the environment.

A committed resort: the Smart Altitude program

As part of the European Alpine Space program ALPSTAR, between 2012 and 2014, Les Orres resort played the leading role in setting up an energy management system. Results:

- 20% reduction in energy consumption

- 7% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions

- 25% reduction in energy bills.

Since April 2018, Les Orres resort has become the leader of a new Alpine Space program: SMART ALTITUDE, funded by Europe and including 11 partners from 6 Alpine arc countries: France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Slovenia.

It is the pilot station for the program, in order to evolve its field approach to mountain energy microgrids, alongside two other stations in Italy and Slovenia.

The aim is to adapt to climate change and put in place the tools that will enable best practices to be disseminated initially to around twenty Alpine resorts, and subsequently to the entire mountain range.

In 2023, the Smart Altitude program has been selected as a finalist for the European Commission's Regiostars award.

Energy consumption reduced by 20%

Sensors track infrastructure consumption in real time, enabling decisions to be taken to optimize energy consumption. Les Orres resort was the winner of the Trophée des Cimes Durables, in December 2016. This is the first time that theAssociation Nationale des Maires de Stations de Montagne (ANMSM) has awarded this prize to a resort in the Southern Alps.

Responsible renovation

Les Orres has been selected by the interministerial AIDER mission as a pilot resort in the Alps. The aim is to design and implement measures to encourage the renovation and remarketing of leisure properties. All this, while taking energy considerations into account.

Snowmaking

Les Orres was one of the first resorts to install artificial snow systems in the 1980s. Since then, the network has grown steadily. Today, around 55% of the surface area of Les Orres is covered by artificial snow, and within 5 years, the aim is to reach a snow coverage rate of 70%. This means reinforcing the pumping infrastructure to ensure a comfortable instantaneous water flow.

The water used to make artificial snow is drawn from sources with a surplus of drinking water, such as the Jerusalem and Charance springs. This is regulated and controlled by the State, which authorizes the withdrawal of a limited quantity of water each year.

To produce artificial snow, Les Orres uses no chemical additives. The manufacturing process relies solely on water, compressed air and cold. A process called "nucleation" is used: a mixture of water and air is expelled at high pressure, creating tiny ice crystals. These crystals grow by freezing from within as they fall over a distance of around 40 meters, forming "aerated" snow.

The main aim is to efficiently manage and control water resources and produce the right amount of snow, without overproducing. Each snow gun has a defined area of coverage, and by monitoring snow depth in real time, the resort can estimate the volume of water needed to maintain a piste in optimal conditions.

The mountain of tomorrow

In recent years, Les Orres has made major investments to modernize its ski lifts, redevelop the 1800 snow front, improve snow cover on the slopes and develop summer activities. In collaboration with the municipality, the resort is now pursuing this dynamic by launching the creation of the Pôle Sport Innovation (PSI).

The development of new technologies

The resort has developed several technological tools to improve its service to holidaymakers.

A CONNECTED RESORT

in the age of digital technology, mobility and new forms of teleworking, Les Orres is a pilot resort for the deployment of fiber, enabling it to develop its business while preserving the environment. Holidaymakers have free access to a new, more efficient WiFi system in the 1650 and 1800 Tourist Offices and on the 1650 and 1800 snow fronts.

DYNAMIC INFORMATION PANELS

3 panels have been installed:

  • at the entrance/exit to the resort at Pramouton
  • at Les Orres 1800
  • on the 1650 snow front.

FREE MOBILE APPLICATION AVAILABLE ON APP STORE AND GOOGLE PLAY.

A unique collection, "Les Orres & Et si c'était A.V.E.C" (And if it were A.V.E.C)

Embrun-based Franco-Brazilian textile designer Fábio de Sá has created a line of accessories using the resort's advertising banners! This initiative is part of the Et si c'était A.V.E.C(Artisanat de Vision Écologique et Circulaire) project, which aims to recycle textiles from the southern region into fashion and decorative accessories. These objects can be found in the Les Orres 1650 tourist office boutique.
